Information technology &amp; supply chain management: role of big data on efficiency

South Africa, like many other countries globally, implemented a lockdown in an attempt to contain the spread of the coronavirus which has had an adverse effect on business operations and sustainability. Minimal information is available concerning the impact of digital technology utilisation on business continuity during such a pandemic. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the impact of digital technology on business continuity during this period at a South African Testing, Inspection and Certification (TIC) company. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 59 employees and data were collected using an online anonymous questionnaire for the different types of digital technology used pre-pandemic and during the pandemic, as well as its impact on interactions and work expectations. Results revealed that the company used virtual meetings, cloud storage, electronic job systems, telecommunications, messaging applications, business intelligence solutions, big data analytics, and online training. There were moderate positive relationships found between the types of technology and business continuity during the pandemic. Areas for continual improvement were reported as network connectivity, communication, and training. It is recommended that post-COVID-19, companies need to continually evaluate the use of digital technology to further reduce the time spent by employees on manual processes thereby improving productivity to provide better customer service and enhance competitive advantage.

Business Continuity in South Africa During COVID-19 Pandemic: Digital Technology Perspective

Adaptation to climate change has emerged as a significant priority for policy and research efforts. This study delves into the multifaceted issue of climate change adaptation within Small and Medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operating in Vietnam. Beyond merely mitigating vulnerability, these enterprises are actively seeking out avenues for green innovation, using adaptive diversification strategies to navigate the challenges posed by a changing climate. Adaptation to climate change has emerged as a significant priority for policy and research efforts. This study focuses on the adaptation strategies of SMEs in Vietnam in response to climate change. It not only aims to mitigate vulnerability but also explores green innovation opportunities through adaptive diversification. The research investigates the influence of human resources on the ability to adapt to diversification, with organizational adaptive culture acting as a mediating variable within the theoretical framework of the Resource-Based View (RBV). Through an analysis of survey data from 280 SMEs in Vietnam using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) in SmartPLS4, the study reveals that both human resources and adaptive culture positively impact SMEs' adaptation to climate change. These findings provide valuable insights for management and policy, underscoring the importance of investing in human resources and nurturing adaptability culture within SMEs to effectively tackle climate change challenges.

Enhancing the Vietnamese SMEs' Adaptation to Climate Change Through Human Resources: The Mediating Effect of Adaptability Culture

In recent years, business and industries are striving to find a balance in the workplace since there is a huge gap in inequalities and gender representation is at the forefront in leadership positions. Despite several initiatives from both the public and private sectors, the gap does not appear to be closing over time in the financial sector in South Africa. The aim of the study is to explore the representation of women in leadership roles in financial organisations in greater Durban area. This was a cross-sectional qualitative study conducted among 10 women who were in management positions. They were recruited using purposive sampling technique. Thematic analysis was performed to identify themes, the study found that women in leadership positions in the financial industries face a variety of difficulties. The issues range from the way males treat women to stereotypical behaviour, harassment, the pay gap, juggling home and work obligations, and male domination. It is therefore recommended that, to advance women into leadership positions, organizations can create policies, provide mentorship programs, provide networking opportunities, promote women, and enforce gender equity policies.

Exploring Challenges Faced by Women Leaders in a Financial Sector in South Africa

The contemporary business landscape is witnessing an escalating demand for sustainable practices as organizations globally grapple with environmental and social challenges. Within the South African context, particularly for Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) Listed Retailers, the imperative to incorporate sustainability initiatives into business operations is evident. Despite growing awareness, there remains a gap in our understanding of the specific dynamics and challenges involved in the implementation of sustainability initiatives within this sector. Therefore, the objective of this study was to explore Sustainability Initiatives within a South African JSE Listed Retailer by the management. This was a qualitative study conducted among 10 managers who were selected purposefully and data were collected using in-depth interviews. Data were transcribed and thematically analysed using NVIVO software. The results underscore the critical significance of leadership involvement in shaping the attitudes and conduct of employees with regard to sustainability. Leadership that proactively promotes and incorporates sustainability principles into its core values fosters the development of a favourable organisational culture. Consequently, this strengthens the commitment, motivation, and buy-in of employees towards sustainability initiatives. Furthermore, the research highlights obstacles that could hinder the effective execution of sustainability practices, including ignorance and resistance to change. The research findings have broader implications than the retailer being studied. They provide valuable insights for organisations worldwide that are attempting to incorporate sustainability into their operations. In a time when organisations are under greater scrutiny to tackle environmental and social issues, it is vital to comprehend the interplay between leadership engagement and employee perceptions in order to cultivate a corporate culture that is both sustainable and accountable.

Leadership Engagement and Perceptions of Sustainability Initiatives Within a South African JSE Listed Retailer

The business environment is a multi-factor framework for economic activity, divided into the internal and external environment. Internal environmental factors can be influenced, managed and controlled by entrepreneurs, while external environmental factors cannot. External environmental factors are determined and regulated by the highest authorities – the national government. The government shapes the external environment of business. The main external factors of the business environment most often identified by researchers are: political, economic, legal and technological. The financial factor is classified as an internal factor of the business environment. Experience shows that the financial factor in the case of Latvia cannot be seen in the context of the internal factors of the business environment as defined by the world's leading scientific sources. Given the international nature of financial decision-making and the inability of entrepreneurs to influence it, the financial factor of the Latvian business environment should be viewed in the context of the external factors of the business environment. Latvian family entrepreneurship should be seen in the context of small and medium-sized enterprises. The aim of the study is to analyse the impact of the financial factor, which includes financial policy and financial system planning at the national level, on the Latvian family business environment. The results of the study show that the national financial policies developed in Latvia since the 1990s have posed a threat to the Latvian business environment. The newly established tax structure, based on labour and consumption taxes, has not been able to ensure the generation of internal sources of finance at national level to foster the development of the business environment. Despite the fact that family entrepreneurship was initially envisaged in policy planning documents, it is not even mentioned in financial policy and planning documents, and hence has not been stimulated or supported by taxation.
