The Westminster Paving Commission was a city-wide authority but its records were effectively lost when they were archived with those of one parish. The work of the Paving Commission exemplifies how local and national history intertwined in eighteenth-century London, and gives the historian a fuller picture of the management of urban space.

HIDDEN PAVEMENTS: THE RECORDS OF THE WESTMINSTER PAVING COMMISSION

Following the death of approximately half of the priests in England in the Black Death, there was a need to recruit considerable numbers of men to fill their places. During 1349 and to some extent into 1350 the number of ordinands far exceeded the annual average. As a result, the ratio of clergy to the reduced population increased but, despite the influx, the number of clergy per parish was reduced. During the remainder of the 1350s, numbers of priests ordained annually in most dioceses fell to less than half of the pre-plague number. Some of the men who came forward in 1349 had already been ordained acolyte in the preceding few years and had probably always intended to proceed to the priesthood, but there were two other groups: men who had been ordained acolyte a decade or more previously and may have decided that they would not progress further but who changed their minds when new opportunities appeared, and men who hurried to become acolytes in 1349 and proceeded swiftly to the priesthood. The social and economic background of the plague-period priests was similar to that of priests ordained earlier in the fourteenth century, and many ordinands came from families which had previously provided priests. The contrast between those parts of the country which supplied relatively high numbers of priests and those, notably the south-east, which provided relatively few, continued. Ordination lists are shown to be an important source for study of the effect of the Black Death on religious provision.

THE BLACK DEATH AND CLERICAL RECRUITMENT: THE EVIDENCE OF ORDINATION LISTS

The rapid growth in shop numbers in eighteenth-century England precipitated a wave of theft. Shoplifting became a major concern to retailers, who successfully lobbied to have it made a capital offence. Thousands of shoplifters were taken to court, particularly in London, and through their cases we can come to understand the nature of this fledgling crime. Pre-trial documents and commercially produced court reports vividly portray how it was perpetrated and how retailers responded to the threat. This paper describes the origin, availability and reliability of these sources, in particular assize court documents and the Proceedings of the Old Bailey. Their content discloses the nature of the threat shopkeepers faced, the tactics of those who sought to plunder their shops, and the inventiveness with which retailers devised countermeasures. A study of this ‘darker side’ of shopping in the archive reveals surprising synergies with modern shop-protection practices.

This paper is an attempt to bring up to date the research first published here in 1973 (Archives, xi (50), Autumn 1973, pp. 76–85). Since then there have been further discoveries, and dispersals have continued through the book and manuscript trade. Although tracking the fate of material of this kind through the salerooms and elsewhere has been rendered more difficult in recent years by the general tightening of data security, it is still possible to highlight further migrations. The original paper attempted to elucidate the various strands of the Fairfax family in Yorkshire; the resulting archives; and their subsequent preservation, dispersal or loss. This is an attempt to bring together information about more recent discoveries and developments. It does not involve itself with the archives of the Virginia estates and their possessors, which derived from the Culpepper inheritance. Nor is it concerned with those families bearing the Fairfax name who were not involved in Yorkshire.

THE FAIRFAX ARCHIVES: A CONTINUING PAPER CHASE

The physical condition, size and complexity of the records of the Court of Arches has long posed difficulties for researchers wishing to exploit this rich resource. The task has now been made much easier by a long-term programme of conservation alongside an ongoing cataloguing project which is making detailed descriptions available for the first time. This case study uses the records of the court to provide a vivid account of the life of the Restoration actor John Lacy. The records disclose intriguing details about his private life as well as revealing just how he managed to survive the closure of the theatres during the Interregnum.

IN THE COURT OF ARCHES: THE PRIVATE LIFE OF JOHN LACY, RESTORATION ACTOR

From 1766 to his death, Edward Gibbon (1737–94) banked with Goslings of Fleet Street. Goslings merged with Barclays in 1896, and their customer ledgers are preserved among the Barclays Group Archives. Bank accounts provide exceptionally reliable historical evidence, but are rarely self-explanatory. The ledgers themselves usually record no more than a date, a name and a sum. Yet with careful analysis, and in conjunction with documents surviving from among Gibbon’s own papers, the accounts can be made to reveal much about his finances. Gibbon claimed that being neither too rich nor too poor enabled him to write his great History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (1776–88). His ‘golden mediocrity’ provided him with leisure and resources, without depriving him of incentive. This essay investigates the truth behind this claim. His position was in fact near the apex of the economic hierarchy, and yet he often found himself short of money. In important ways, such as his not marrying and his decision to retire from London to Lausanne, his moderate fortune constrained his choices. More generally, the essay also illustrates how much can be learned and deduced from careful examination and analysis of the bare list of transactions in a bank account.

The arrival of COVID-19 led to a search for historical analogies and lessons which mislead rather than inform. A more appropriate response is to use our present experience to inform our historical enquiries by drawing attention to issues that have been marginalised or ignored, such as consent or resistance to vaccination, and the changing frontier between human and animal species. The nature of evidence on the lived experience of and policy responses to COVID is considered, and the ways in which policy success and failure might be assessed and interpreted. Crises can lead to a radical change in social assumptions and policies, or to the survival of the status quo. The outcome in the case of COVID-19 will depend on which narrative dominates, of failure and political retribution or success and affirmation.
