This paper proposes some innovative fault-remedial control strategies for failures occurring in the drive voltage inverter.

Innovative Remedial Strategies for Inverter Faults in IPM Synchronous Motor Drives

This paper provides ranges of resistance values for 2/0 and 4/0 temporary grounding (TG) jumpers that when subjected to rated fault tests sustained: no damage, some fusing, and failed by separation. This information is unique and can be used for establishing minimum resistance values for TG jumper seating and selecting pass/fail criterion. The results were obtained from special tests conducted at Bonneville Power Administration and Ontario Hydro Power Technologies high current laboratories.

Electrical Resistance Data from Fault Tests for 2/0 and 4/0 Temporary Grounding Jumpers

This paper presents results of simulation studies of the influence of methods of grounding the stator winding of the unit-connected generator neutral on the operating conditions of a 100% ground-fault protection excited by the third harmonic voltages ratio in the generator neutral and at its terminals. The analysis was performed for a generator with the neutral grounded through a ground-fault neutralizer, a third harmonic stop filter, a resistor, and a capacitive voltage divider. The influence of the parameters of the particular elements of the grounding circuits on the voltage feeding measuring element of the protection was determined. The capacitance to ground of the generator breakers was taken into account. The simulations were run for 1,110 MVA unit-concerted generator at ground faults along the whole length of the generator stator winding. It has been found that the method of grounding the generator neutral and the parameter of the grounding elements significantly influences the operating conditions of this protection. It is shown that, through the proper selection of these parameters, the ground-fault protection of whole stator winding, counting from the generator neutral to the terminals, is ensured.

Analysis of Operating Conditions of Ground-Fault Protection Schemes for Generator Stator Winding

A significant problem faced by utility operators is the degradation and failure of wooden cross-arms on transmission line support structures. A nondestructive, noncontact, reliable method is proposed that can evaluate the structural integrity of these cross-arms quickly and cost-effectively. This method utilizes a helicopter-based laser vibrometer to measure vibrations induced in a cross-arm by the helicopter's rotors and engine. An artificial neural network (ANN) then uses these vibration spectra to estimate cross-arm breaking strength. The first type of ANN employed is the feed-forward artificial neural network (FFANN). After proper training, the FFANN can reliably discern healthy cross-arms from those that are in need of replacement based on vibration spectra. Next, a self-organizing map is applied to this same problem, and its advantages are discussed. Finally, an FFANN-based data compression scheme is presented for use as a preprocessor for the vibration spectra.

Estimation of Wooden Cross-Arm Integrity Using Artificial Neural Networks and Laser Vibrometry

Changes in power system operating conditions can affect both the reach point of distance relays and the coordination of distance and overcurrent relays. To improve the performance of the protection system, an adaptive scheme of relay settings is proposed. That is possible since protection relays became digital. This paper describes a system for online adaptive setting and coordinating of protection relays in meshed networks where the backup protection is achieved in remote form. After changes in the state of the network, an expert system (ES) performs the detection and proposes the correction of erroneous settings of protection zones and miscoordinations between relays at different stations; through an algorithm based on a fast determination of a nonminimal set of break-point relays, new time characteristics for coordination are found. Results of applying the developed system to a test network of 34 nodes, 55 branches, and 110 relays are shown.
