Radiation of sound wave through a lined duct with perforated end is analyzed rigorously. The problem considered is axisymmetric. By using the Fourier transform technique in conjunction with the Mode Matching method, the related boundary value problem is formulated as a Wiener-Hopf (W-H) equation. The Mode-Matching technique allows us to express the field component defined in the waveguide region in terms of normal modes. The solution involves a set of infinitely many expansion coefficients satisfying an infinite system of linear algebraic equations. The numerical solution of this system is obtained for different parameters of the problem such as the surface impedances, specific impedance of the perforated screen and their effects on the radiation phenomenon are shown graphically.

The paper presents the implementation of the rigorous method of analytical regularization to the canonical problem of axially-symmetric diff raction from a soft ring. The series equations of the problem are reduced to an infinite series of linear algebraic equations (ISLAE) and the technique of analytical regularization is applied. Finally, the resulting matrix equation is the ISLAE of the second kind and can be solved numerically by the truncation method with any desired accuracy. The near field in the vicinity of the aperture of the ring is presented in the form of maps of the normalised total field. The far field features of the ring are obtained and discussed. The validation of our calculation is confirmed by testing of the mode matching conditions and through the comparison of the results with those for a disc.

Acoustic Plane Wave Diffraction from a Circular Soft Ring

A new sensing node container based on a spherical piezoelectric transducer is proposed. This device provides broadband vibrational energy harvesting and sensing facilities intended for underwater wireless sensor networks. The transducer is composed of two acrylic glass (PMMA) half-spherical shells and a Pz26 piezoelectric ring clamped between the two shells. A simulation model of vibrational energy harvesting has been developed with electromechanical circuits for thickness and radial vibrational modes. This approach was validated by a finite element simulation. As a result, optimal power harvesting conditions and estimated harvested voltage were defined. A prototype of 2.2 cm in diameter was realized and characterized. Analysis in air environment reveals several structural resonance modes in the 20–80 kHz frequency range. The directivity patterns corresponding to these modes was obtained using laser Doppler vibrometry. The measurements for the underwater environment show that the structural resonance modes shift down in frequency to the 10–60 kHz range, and exhibiting low directivity dependence. Power harvesting performances was measured and quantified relative to acoustical pres- sure measurements using a hydrophone. The average conversion coefficient value was found to be in the order of 3 V/MPa. In broadband excitation mode, and for an acoustic pressure of 10 kPa, the amount of harvested power out of 5 main resonance modes is 3.3 μW.

Broadband Vibrational Energy Harvesting with a Spherical Piezoelectric Transducer Devoted to Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks

Everyday listening environments are characterized by far more complex spatial, spectral and temporal sound field distributions than the acoustic stimuli that are typically employed in controlled laboratory settings. As such, the reproduction of acoustic listening environments has become important for several research avenues related to sound perception, such as hearing loss rehabilitation, soundscapes, speech communication, auditory scene analysis, automatic scene classification, and room acoustics. However, the recordings of acoustic environments that are used as test material in these research areas are usually designed specifically for one study, or are provided in custom databases that cannot be universally adapted, beyond their original application. In this work we present the Ambisonic Recordings of Typical Environments (ARTE) database, which addresses several research needs simultaneously: realistic audio recordings that can be reproduced in 3D, 2D, or binaurally, with known acoustic properties, including absolute level and room impulse response. Multichannel higher-order ambisonic recordings of 13 realistic typical environments (e.g., office, cafè, dinner party, train station) were processed, acoustically analyzed, and subjectively evaluated to determine their perceived identity. The recordings are delivered in a generic format that may be reproduced with different hardware setups, and may also be used in binaural, or single-channel setups. Room impulse responses, as well as detailed acoustic analyses, of all environments supplement the recordings. The database is made open to the research community with the explicit intention to expand it in the future and include more scenes.

The Ambisonic Recordings of Typical Environments (ARTE) Database

Cavity resonance is one of the important sources of tire noise. The measures commonly used for suppressing the cavity resonance is to paste sound absorbing material on the inner surface of the tire, which has been proved to be very effective by many experimental studies. But so far there is a lack of methods to assess the influence of absorbing material on the cavity resonance and help determine the optimal sound absorbing material for a tire. To resolve this problem, a method based on the eigenvalue analysis is proposed. In the method, the resonance of a tire cavity lined with sound absorbing material is turned into a complex eigenvalue problem of a closed cavity with prescribed boundary conditions. The real and imaginary parts of the complex eigenvalue can then be used to represent the influence of sound absorbing material on the cavity resonance. Experiments were conducted on a tire lined with polyurethane foams of different thickness and flow resistivity to validate the results obtained by the proposed method, and a good agreement between their results is achieved.

On the Resonance of a Lined Tire Cavity

Noise annoyance models using only mean energy-based indices provide weak prediction. Actually various factors influence noise annoyance. different studies from the literature are carried out in laboratory conditions to understand some factors with the long-term aim of enhancing noise annoyance models. Laboratory experiments of assessing noise annoyance are based on imaginary or simulated context. The method with imaginary context is often questioned as participants listen to noise sequences. The current study aims at comparing the two methods in terms of total annoyance model testing. It revealed that annoyance models, respectively built within imaginary and simulated contexts, provided similar prediction when they were tested using in-field annoyance responses. Thus, the laboratory method with imaginary context seems to be as suitable as the method with simulated context to assess annoyance in laboratory conditions.

Laboratory Methods with Imaginary and Simulated Contexts to Assess Noise Annoyance: A Comparison in Terms of Annoyance Model Testing

Regulations on safe ultrasound exposure limits are based on a very limited number of studies, which have only considered audiometric threshold shifts as indicators of hearing deficits. The purpose of the current study was to assess the effects of exposure to high-intensity ultrasound on a range of measures of hearing function, which included audiometric thresholds, as well as subclinical measures of hearing deficits: speech-in-noise understanding, supra-threshold auditory brainstem response wave I amplitude and latency, and frequency following response levels to amplitude modulated (AM) tones. Changes in these measures were assessed before and after exposure of the left ear to high-intensity ultrasound in a group of nine young listeners. These changes were compared to those observed in a control group of nine young listeners. Exposure consisted in the presentation of a 40-kHz AM tone at levels of 105, 110, 115, and 120 dB SPL for 10 minutes at each level, plus an exposure to a 40-kHz unmodulated tone during an ultrasound detection task, for a total duration of 50 seconds. None of the measures of hearing function was found to change significantly more for the left compared to the right ear, for participants of the exposure group compared to control participants. Electroencephalographic recordings obtained during exposure to the AM tone did not show significant phase-locked activity at the modulation frequency or at low-frequency subharmonics of the ultrasound tone. One out of nine participants was able to perform the ultrasound detection task above chance level, although due to limitations of the experimental setup the mechanism by which she could detect the presentation of the tone remains unclear.

Effects of High-Intensity Airborne Ultrasound Exposure on Behavioural and Electrophysiological Measures of Auditory Function

Towards the establishment of traceability in sound power in airborne sound, the present study focuses on the dissemination procedure. Aerodynamic reference sound sources were studied as potential transfer standards. Initially, the sources were examined in the up-to-present requirements. The core of the study is the correction required for the transition from calibration to in situ conditions. The influence of atmospheric pressure, ambient temperature and fan rotation speed was investigated and the corresponding correction was determined. A comparison to an existing correction was also performed. Near field effects were another part of the study. The related uncertainty was estimated in a transparent approach. The dependency of the uncertainty on the in situ and calibration condition values is also presented.
