The kinematic behaviour of drag embedment anchors has become a recent research focus due to the increase in offshore renewable energy devices. This is due to their potential use as an anchoring system for future floating wind applications, in addition to the need to understand their penetration behaviour as a part of the cable burial risk assessment (CBRA). Studies on the behaviour of anchors typically consist of field scale or model centrifuge tests, where such facilities are not readily available to all and can result in significant cost. In addition to this, measuring the load-penetration behaviour of an anchor has proven to be a significant challenge, as any contact-based methods are likely to influence the penetration behaviour of the anchor. In this paper a novel wireless method of recording the inclination of the anchor and calculating the penetration depth is presented. A comparison of the penetration behaviour of a Class F (AC-14) anchor has been investigated in sand using centrifuge and 1-g model scale testing. The results indicate that the 1-g testing can match the behaviour of the anchor testing in the centrifuge in terms of both the position of the anchor and its orientation during the dragging event.

Comparison of 1g and centrifuge modelling of drag embedment anchors with subsurface wireless tracking

An attempt has been made to study the mechanical behaviour of a cantilever-type large-diameter steel tubular pile retaining wall embedded in soft rock subjected to sequential dynamic and static loadings by centrifuge modelling. A centrifuge model is developed to simulate sequential dynamic and static loadings with clear boundary conditions, aiming to comprehend the mechanical response of a cantilever-type retaining wall embedded into the soft rock. The model wall was made of steel tubular piles with a 2m diameter and 25mm thickness in a prototype scale under 50g. Wall retained height (H) and embedment depth (d r ) into model soft rock (q u =1.4MPa) were 12m and 3m, respectively. Sequential loadings were applied to the model: firstly, dynamic loadings by sinusoidal input accelerations to the wall with dry retained sand; secondly, static loading by the rising water level in the retained sand; and thirdly, dynamic loadings in the wet sand condition. It was found that the resilience of the wall created by the confinement of soft rock during the dynamic loading is a critical factor that controls the earth pressure and the dynamic and residual displacements of the wall, both during and after the dynamic loading and the static loading. Due to the resilience effect, an effective earth pressure ratio of more than the design active or even an at-rest pressure coefficient could be expected, especially after dynamic loading. However, A slight wall movement in the static loading and wall creep displacement after dynamic loading could reduce this resilience effect. Secured rock confinement could be ensured for the displacement over 2%H caused by the sequential loadings.

Dewatering in soils serves various purposes in the field of geotechnical engineering as well as other disciplines. In geotechnical engineering, dewatering is effective for improving stability, reducing settlements, and limiting seepage of contaminated pore fluid. This study details the development of an experimental setup that enables dewatering and rewetting soil deposits in-flight in a geotechnical centrifuge while the pore pressures/suctions and moisture contents are measured. Cone penetration tests and shear wave velocity measurements are also used to characterize the material in-flight. Detailed discussion is provided regarding the construction of the tensiometers and calibration of the moisture content probes. Tests are performed on two coal combustion products (CCPs) to exemplify the capabilities of the equipment. Illustrative test results provide time histories and profiles of soil suction and water content at different depths, agreeing well with measurements from laboratory soil-water retention curves. The results also show that dewatering of the CCP deposits leads to significant increases in strength and stiffness, and that after subsequent rewetting, the material maintains a permanent increase in stiffness. The developed system enables an economical and reliable study of the impacts related to dewatering and rewetting cycles to fulfill research purposes in a broad range of engineering disciplines.

This paper presents results of the influence of voids on the dynamic response of tunnel linings and surrounding strata acquired in series of model tests. An experimental model of a tunnel was tested with a void of varying size (ratio of void width-to-tunnel diameter of 0.13, 0.27 and 0.4) and location (at tunnel apex, haunch and invert). During the tests, the tunnel invert was applied with three types of vibration loads: a sinusoidal load with a fixed frequency, a sinusoidal sweep load and a simulated train load. The tunnel lining and soil response were recorded by accelerometers, with results for analysis presented in both time and frequency domains. The experimental results manifest that the voids can have a distinct influence on the tunnel and soil dynamic response, with a clear amplification of tunnel and soil response for certain cases. The test results also demonstrate that the tunnel and soil response are sensitive to the void size and location in the near field. However, with increased distance from the excitation source, the void effects on the tunnel and soil dynamic response gradually declines.

Effects of voids on the dynamic response of tunnels under train-induced vibration loads

The use of dynamic centrifuge modelling has substantially risen over the years for investigating failure mechanisms, studying the physics-based mechanics of soil structure systems, and validating numerical tools. Nevertheless, the primary issues associated with the use of servo-hydraulic actuators (presently the prevailing shaking table for a geotechnical centrifuge) are their exorbitant expense, intricate operation, and shaking control. This paper describes the development of a novel cylindrical cam shaker for the newly installed Mark III geotechnical centrifuge facility at Tokyo City University. The cylindrical cam mechanism is activated once the desired voltage is applied via the electrical slip rings. The rotation of the cylindrical cam is translated into the linear motion of the follower plate which then moves the shaker linearly back and forth. A stepwise procedure is developed to determine the voltage required to drive the shaker and achieve the desired earthquake characteristics for a given payload mass and centrifugal acceleration. The performance of the shaker was systematically assessed through a series of dynamic centrifuge experiments at different centrifugal accelerations and payload masses. Finally, the excellent capabilities of the developed mechanical shaker in terms of the repeatability of the base motions were demonstrated using a model example.
