Abstract: This Caring Science study aims to gain knowledge of nursing students becoming caring nurses through their use of reflection grounded in caring theories in role-play simulation. Individually written reflections were collected from 43 undergraduate nursing students from Norway, who had participated in role-play simulation with caring as the major subject. A qualitative content analysis resulted in three main themes: Becoming takes place in the movement between theory and experience, Becoming enables students to have the courage to be vulnerable and take responsibility, and Becoming enables a relationship where they can be affected and feel compassion.

Becoming a Caring Nurse Through Reflection in a Role-Playing Simulation

Abstract: Challenging to teach and difficult to master, the art of nursing is complex and multidimensional. Critical empathy is discussed as integral to the art of nursing, particularly in the increasingly demanding healthcare environment. Supported by design thinking and critical pedagogy, a theoretical framework for the collaborative classroom is proposed as a foundation for teaching critical empathy. As an initial prototype, a mental health nursing course for prelicensure undergraduate nursing students has successfully been converted to the collaborative classroom pedagogy. Preliminary outcomes and initial challenges are discussed. Critical empathy is demonstrated, taught, and refined through the collaborative classroom with nursing students.

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to present a nursing theoretical framework. Methodologically, the frame of reference is an interaction between philosophical, theoretical reflections, and empirical projects predominantly guided by patient perspectives. The presented framework is divided into three themes: (a) the basic terms of nurse–patient collaboration, where the purpose is to achieve the right distribution of responsibility, and the focus is on how power is actively formed to maintain trust; (b) the professional content of nursing, where the goal is to underline the importance of life phenomena as an addition to human needs; and (c) nursing competencies, where the goal is to develop sensory-focused, situational attention and courage.

Professional Nursing Care: A Framework

Abstract: This qualitative caring science study aims to seek a deeper understanding of loss and health after a life change viewed from a male perspective. In-depth interviews with 15 men were analyzed with thematic analysis. The results highlight seven themes: losing connection and belonging, losing control, losing oneself, belonging to a community and having one’s own projects, living everyday life and having a point of reference, getting up and finding a new platform, and having dreams and faith in the future. The themes are discussed against Erikson’s theory and the movement between suffering and health.

A Caring Science Study About Loss and Health After Life Changes

Abstract : This article offers a different path for the profession of nursing to consider to minimize compassion fatigue using caring science. The methods used in this study are taking the findings of a qualitative research study and looking at them through the lens of the theory-guided practice in Unitary Caring Science. This article offers new ways of patterning nurse experiences through the essential truths in Unitary Caring Science toward a path of experiencing compassion without fatigue. The article shares an ideal where compassion found within transpersonal relational caring moments becomes the hallmark to help the patients and nurses simultaneously heal.

Compassion Without Fatigue: A Unitary Caring Science Approach Part III—Theory-Guided Practice to Advance and Sustain Nurses

This descriptive correlational research study aimed to explore the relationship between patients’ experience of nurse caring and patients’ readiness to transition from the hospital to home or other care settings in a large acute care hospital in South Florida. In addition, the predictors among the patients’ characteristics of patients’ readiness to care transition were examined. The study was grounded in Duffy’s Quality Caring Model. A convenience sample of 103 medical-surgical patients was recruited for the study. The participants completed the demographic data survey, the Caring Assessment Tool-V, and the Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale-Adult Form. The results of the study showed a strong positive correlation between patients’ experience of nurse caring and patients’ readiness to care transition ( r = .243, p &lt; .05). Furthermore, marital status could predict patients’ readiness to care transition based on perceived knowledge, coping ability, and expected support ( f = .0625, p &lt; .05). The study highlights the importance of nurse caring in enhancing patients’ readiness to care transition and valuing the patients’ support systems.

Proposed variables for retention have includedimproving pay, staffing, recognition, and access to appropriate mental health resources. This author proposes that to retain anurse, one must first understand nurses at their core. Nurses are trained to speak to the why, the underlying rationale for anygiven condition or intervention. Through simple yet powerful practices of self-care, such as taking a deep breath and expressing gratitude, the nurse learns to embrace her exhaustion and pain. The poem resonates with the universal message that, amidst caring for others, it is essential to extend the same compassion and care to oneself. This poem reminds us all of the transformative power of self-care and self-compassion, especially in the most challenging of circumstance.

Over the past two decades, emotional exhaustion has become one of the most prevalent issues affecting helping professions. In nursing, studies have shown that emotional exhaustion may affect not only the physical and mental health of nurses but also patient outcomes. This possibility highlights the need to explore emotional exhaustion to comprehensively understand this condition. Walker and Avant’s concept analysis method was used to analyze the concept of emotional exhaustion and identify its meanings, attributes, antecedents, consequences, empirical uses, and implications for nursing. Addressing emotional exhaustion among nurses is crucial to maintain patient safety, enhance the quality of nursing care, and improve healthcare organizations’ outcomes.
