Electric vehicles (EVs) typically emit little noise at low driving speeds, which increases the risk of accidents for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians. To reduce this risk, regulations demand that newly sold EVs have to be equipped with an acoustic vehicle alerting system (AVAS), which radiates artificial warning sounds. Developing AVAS sounds that provide a sufficient warning capability while limiting traffic noise annoyance requires laboratory listening experiments; such experiments need accurate auralization methods. Even though several auralization tools are already established in the research field, those frameworks require additional data to simulate EVs. This paper presents an electric vehicle auralization toolchain combined with an open-access database, including AVAS measurements, synthesis algorithms, and numerically calculated sound source directivities for three different electric passenger cars. The auralization method was validated numerically and in a listening experiment, comparing simulated EV passages to binaural in-situ recordings. The results of this perceptual validation indicate that stimuli generated with the presented method are perceived as slightly less plausible than in-situ recordings and that they result in a similar distribution of annoyance ratings but a higher perceived vehicle velocity compared to the reference recordings.

Auralization of electric vehicles for the perceptual evaluation of acoustic vehicle alerting systems

The Odeo Cornaro is a remarkable example of Renaissance architecture featuring an octagonal umbrella-vaulted hall surrounded by four adjacent barrel-vaulted spaces. According to the principles outlined by Vitruvius, the central octagonal hall was prized for its acoustical qualities, emphasizing sound propagation and vocal resonance. Due to its remarkably well-preserved condition, the structure continues to serve as a prestigious venue for musical and cultural events. This study investigates the acoustic of this remarkably preserved musical space, employing measurements and numerical models. Finite element analysis and geometrical acoustics models were employed to gain comprehensive insights into sound pressure level distribution across a broad frequency spectrum. The Odeo stands as an outstanding historical music venue due to its capacity to enhance vocal projection while maintaining an intimate ambience during musical performances.

Acoustic analysis of a well-preserved Renaissance music space: The Odeo Cornaro in Padua

Speech recognition scores in noise can be affected by measurement conditions such as the spatial configuration, room acoustic properties, or the position and head orientation of a test person. This is critical when comparing repeated measurements, e.g., during hearing aid verification. While the basic effects of these factors are known, specific effect sizes for practically relevant configurations have not previously been reported. We investigated the effects of audiological test-room acoustics with low reverberation, and of head movements on speech-in-noise tests for typical spatial configurations. Speech-recognition thresholds (SRTs) and head movements were measured in 240 normal-hearing participants in six rooms for five loudspeaker configurations (S 0 N 0 , S 0 N ±45 , S 0 N ±90 , S 0 N 180 and S ±45 N ∓45 ). Additionally, head positions were reproduced with an artificial head, and using a binaural speech intelligibility model, binaural room impulse responses were measured to estimate the influence of head movements on the SRT. The results show that the effects of room acoustic properties and head movements varies greatly between spatial configurations. Head rotations around the vertical axis can affect speech recognition scores by up to 8 dB, most critically for the configuration S 0 N 180 . For spatially separated sound sources, different room acoustic conditions caused differences in SRT of up to 5 dB.

Effect of room acoustic properties and head orientation on practical speech-in-noise measurements for various spatial configurations

To attenuate low-frequency noise in square ventilation ducts, a tunable duct silencer consisting of composite Helmholtz resonators (HR) that precisely controlled by a step motor was proposed in this paper. An analytical model based on temporal coupled mode theory (TCMT) is applied to explain the sound absorption mechanism. The design breaks the limitation that the operating frequency of a silencer is fixed after manufacturing and avoids the degradation of ventilation conditions by attaching to the duct as a side branch. By using a step motor to drive the tunable cavity HR, the silencer can achieve accurate and continuous adjustment of the operating frequency over the entire operating frequency spectrum. In the experiment, the silencer has an absorption bandwidth of 250 Hz and ranges from 710 Hz to 960 Hz. Porous material is inserted into the cavities of HR to improve the damping properties. When integrated into the simulation model, it enables the rapid design of silencer dimensions for different sound absorption frequencies. The design demonstrates a new solution for low frequency sound attenuation in ventilation ducts and provides a potential technique for the future development of active controlled duct silencers.

Tunable silencer for rectangular ventilation duct based on composite Helmholtz resonators

The “OVBOX” is a tool for low-delay network audio communication and generic data transmission between multiple clients. Acoustic end-to-end delays of about 30 ms can be achieved, assuming a good internet connection and a distance between clients of less than about 1500 km. For optimal spatial perception, e.g., when using multiple instruments of similar timbre, an individual 3-dimensional room acoustic simulation based on physical modelling is applied in each client. The system is optimised for headless operation using a dedicated single-board computer (Raspberry Pi 4B), but desktop clients are also available for better integration with other audio software. A client-server system allows remote configuration and automatic traversal of network address translation routers and firewalls. With the low latency that can be achieved, the “OVBOX” is used for music applications such as distributed rehearsals or concerts. Other applications include hearing research to achieve interactive speech communication with low delay transmission of head movements for real-time control of virtual reality, and transmission of other biophysical data for online analysis or central data logging. The tool is fully open source.
