Brinjal is one of the most important commercial solanaceous vegetable crops. Root knot nematodes cause severe yield losses in brinjal both in open and poly house conditions. Host plant resistance is considered to be a viable solution and cost-effective method to manage the root knot nematodes. Ten genotypes along with their nineteen F1 hybrids were screened for resistance to root knot nematode and biochemical basis of resistance was assessed. Two F1 hybrids viz., IIHR-824 x VI046101, IIHR-824 x IIHR-766, parents viz., IIHR-824 and VI046103 were found to be resistance to M. incognita with gall index/ egg mass index of 1. Three F1 hybrids, IIHR-824 x IIHR-356, IIHR-824 x IIHR-835, VI046103 x IIHR-834 showed moderately resistant reaction. The root biochemical compounds analysis indicated that, total phenolic content (67.05 mg/g) and flavonoids (121.32 mg/g) were found higher in the inoculated roots of resistant line i.e. IIHR-824 indicating their role in conferring resistance. The identified F1 hybrids having resistance can be explored for commercial cultivation.

The present investigation was carried out to study the oil quality and estimate fatty acid (omega-3 and omega- 6) composition in bottle gourd using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Results indicated that the extracted bottle gourd seed oil was estimated to have an oil content (25.2%), polyunsaturated fatty acids viz., omega-3 (6.63%), omega-6 (69.74%) and others (0.17%), which play a major role in, cardiovascular health and has anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and anti-cancer benefits. It also consisted of saturated fatty acids viz., palmitic acid (9.78%), stearic acid (4.45%) and others (0.97%) along with monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) (5.99%) without oleic acid (omega-9). Due to increased demand for specialty edible oil in both domestic and industrial use, it becomes necessary to exploit the potential of bottle gourd seeds as a novel source of edible oil. Being a rich source of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, which lacks omega-9 known for oxidative stability required for storage and cooking, it can be commercialized as cooking oil by blending it with edible oil rich in oleic acid or can also be supplied as an omega-6-rich capsule as a food supplement in future.

The serpentine leaf miner, Liriomyza trifolii, is an invasive pest that affects plants, causing damage to the leaves and reducing crop yield. Number of generations of serpentine leaf miner was assessed under current and expected future climate change scenarios. The assessment was done for Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP 8.5) future climate change scenario in India. L. trifolii would have had 16-19 generations, in base line and 17-24 in 2050-time frame under future climate change in Andhra Pradesh conditions. Under Arunachal Pradesh conditions, it would have had 6-14 generations in base line and is expected to complete the same number of generations in 2050, scenario. Under Sikkim conditions 3 - 4 and 5 number of generations were assessed for present and future climate change scenario. Suitability of the localities was expressed in terms of Ecoclimatic index (EI) ranging from 0 to &gt; 20 by combining the interaction effect of various stress indices and growth indices for the development of L. trifolii. It was observed that in temperate areas the pest incidence may increase in future, in contrast to the decreasing trend in areas where already the prevailing temperatures are near upper thresholds. It is therefore expected that number of generations of L. trifolii would increase with the rising temperatures under climate change situations.

Chrysanthemum (Dendranthema x grandiflora Tzvelv.), is one of the commercially grown flower crops worldwide, valued for its cut flower, loose flower, pot mums, bedding etc. To overcome the challenges for cross breeding in chrysanthemum, the access to viable pollen, cultivar distant in location and difference in flowering, are required. Low pollen viability along with self-incompatibility are mainly responsible for low seed set in modern chrysanthemum cultivars. In the present study, pollen viability was tested by staining pollen with Alexander staining solution and examined under light microscope (20X). In vitro pollen germination was investigated in 10 chrysanthemum genotypes with different concentrations of sucrose (0, 5%, 10%, and 15%), PEG4000 (0, 10%, 20% and 30%) and their combination, as basal medium. Significant differences were observed among genotypes with respect to pollen viability, which was recorded highest in Red Stone (95.02%) followed by IIHR6-26 (88.20%), IIHR9-3 (87.44%), Sweta Singar (85.59%), Kalpana (79.97%), IIHR2-7 (73.50%), and White Andaman (64.14%), while, lowest pollen viability was recorded in IIHR6-29 (49.55%). Negligible in vitro pollen germination was observed among the genotypes when sucrose was used as pollen germination medium. However, highest germinability of pollen was recorded at 20% PEG4000 in IIHR9-3 (43.57%) followed by Kalpana (19.43%) and IIHR6-29 (19.34%). The best media for in vitro pollen germination was 15% sucrose + 30% PEG. Irrespective of different media combination, the genotypes namely, IIHR9-3, IIHR2-7 and IIHR6-26 showed better in vitro pollen germination. These results provide a valuable background to theconventional breeding to create hybrids through cross-pollination.

Climate change is expected to elevate drought frequency, straining agricultural freshwater resources. Developing drought-tolerant grapevine varieties is crucial. This study examined grape scion and rootstock genotypes under well-watered (WW) and induced-drought (ID) conditions. ID treatment reduced vine length by 11.34-35.15%, with Vitis parviflora, 110R, and Male Hybrid rootstocks showing superior growth. Root length increased under ID, indicating an adaptive moisture-seeking response. The ID treatment led to substantial reduction in leaf count and average leaf area, especially in Flame Seedless (27.71 and 19.07 cm2, respectively). Drought stress elevated chlorophyll a:b ratio, affecting chlorophyll degradation in different genotypes. Significant variations were observed in leaf and root iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) contents. Enzyme activities particularly peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase especially rose under drought, particularly in V. parviflora (3.39 μM guaiacol min-1 mg-1 protein and 1.33EU/ml/min respectively) likely to be contributing in drought tolerance mechanism. Principal component analysis (PCA) highlighted impact of traits on genotypes, emphasizing V. parviflora, Male Hybrid and Pusa Navrang as superior drought stress tolerant genotypes. Genotype clustering confirmed distinct groupings, while, correlation analysis unveiled intricate trait interactions.
