Detailed stratigraphic sections recorded by the mining industry in Great Britain were first published during the 18 th century. In the northern Pennines, Forster presented the first representative long composite stratigraphic section in 1809. It encompassed the entire known Carboniferous (as it was later named) succession, with the portion representing the lead mining district summarising ‘ a sequence worked out during many centuries of lead mining .’ Three other shorter sections, also compiled from mining industry data and dating to between 1785 and 1800, had been published previously, with limited circulation. While the lateral continuity of the geology results in a broad similarity across all of the early sections, same-scale comparison combined with contemporary accounts constrains locations of the source data. A recent assertion that an unpublished composite section presented by Walton in 1793 to the Literary and Philosophical Society of Newcastle-on-Tyne was the first ‘ stratigraphical section of the lead mining districts ’ with ‘ Hutchinson, Millar and then Forster later using his work without acknowledgement ’ is shown to be incorrect. The interest of Sir Joseph Banks in the emergence of stratigraphic geology in this period suggests that he may have been the enigmatic ‘A Constant Reader’ who corresponded on the topic of these early sections in the Philosophical Magazine. Forster's 1809 publication was the first concise synthesis of the Pennines Carboniferous, making ‘the miners’ succession’ more widely accessible and providing a basis for later work.

Two previously unrecorded invertebrate trackway types, Kouphichnium . isp. indet. and Kouphichnium cf. arizonae , are described from the Middle Jurassic Saltwick Formation of the Cleveland Basin, Yorkshire. Echinoids are poorly known from the Devonian of SW England. This report records an external mould of a solitary primary spine in a chert cobble collected from near the site of Wolborough Quarry, SW Devon, a well-known Middle Devonian palaeontological site. However, cherts are rare in Devonian limestones of south Devon and the spine is unusually robust in comparison with those of other Devonian taxa. The cobble is here interpreted as an erratic, most probably an Upper Cretaceous flint, and the spine is identified as Prionocidaris sp. cf. P. vendocinensis (Agassiz &amp; Desor). This is another illustration of the high fidelity possible in fossils preserved in cherts even after reworking.

An enigmatic echinoid spine from south Devon, UK: Devonian or Cretaceous?

Three echinoid genera are identified from Visean (Mississippian, Lower Carboniferous) rocks of the Peak District, namely Melonechinus Meek &amp; Worthen, Archaeocidaris M'Coy and Lepidocidaris Meek &amp; Worthen. Even the best preserved specimens from this area only occur as a jumble of plates. Melonechinus etheridgei (Keeping) (Chadian? to Brigantian?) has thick test plates; interambulacral plates are commonly hexagonal; ambulacra include multiple columns of pore pairs; and plate surfaces bear many small secondary tubercles. Archaeocidaris sp. or spp. (Chadian? to Brigantian) has long, robust radioles with a smooth shaft and prominent spinules; associated test plates (mainly interambulacra) are considered coeval. Rare Lepidocidaris sp. (Asbian? to Brigantian), including Archaeocidaris glabrispina (Phillips), is only recognized from rare, smooth radioles; test plates resemble those of Archaeocidaris . Lepidocidaris is only known from the platform carbonate shelf of Derbyshire; other echinoid taxa occur on both the shelf succession and the deeper water carbonate succession deposited adjacent to the shelf.

A magnetometer survey, conducted with the initial aim of delineating the extent of a magnetite-rich orebody within the Teesdale Fault in the Harwood Valley of Upper Teesdale, unexpectedly revealed a Palaeogene remanent magnetization. This is interpreted as reflecting the presence at depth of a hitherto unrecorded section of the Armathwaite–Cleveland Dyke, a member of the Palaeogene Mull Swarm of intrusions. The dyke has now been continuously mapped magnetically from the easternmost outcrop of its Armathwaite section in the South Tyne Valley, near Garrigill, to the westernmost outcrop of the Cleveland section in Ettersgill, Teesdale, where it follows the Teesdale Fault and undergoes a small dextral en-échelon offset. We retain the originally proposed mechanism for the formation of the orebody, by the interaction between Northern Pennine mineralizing fluids and the still hot, recently intruded Permo-Carboniferous Whin Sill and its contact rocks. We find no evidence of a wider distribution of ore, or of Permian magnetization. We conclude that the orebody was emplaced along the Teesdale fault and that its magnetic signature was thermally re-set during the Palaeogene intrusion.

The Palaeogene Armathwaite–Cleveland Dyke in upper Teesdale, northern England: magnetic characteristics and relationship to mineralization

A World Heritage Site since 1979, the Theban Necropolis was built by the Pharaohs of the 18th to 20th Dynasties ( c. 1539 – 1075 BCE). A variety of pharaonic (and lesser nobles') tombs, funerary temples and sanctuaries were located/excavated in the lower part of the c. 400 m high pyramidal El Qurn in a variety of lithofacies (predominantly marine limestones and shales). These monuments are located in regionally persistent structural entities as well as gravitational collapse structures (GCS) whose probable origin and timing are reviewed and updated here, based on information that was unavailable to us at the time of writing a complementary paper in 2008 (but only published in 2015). We review here the historical development of the Theban Necropolis in the framework of the geological and geomorphological landscape and the first geological map of the region prepared by our Working Group for the Theban International Geoarcheological Project (TIGA) in 2011. We conclude with a preferential prioritizing of the perceived short- and long-term threats to the preservation of the Theban Necropolis and its monuments: least vulnerable to destabilization are the Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, Block of Sheik Abdel Qurnah – El Khokkah; more vulnerable are Deir El Medina, Qunet Mura'I and El Assasif; most vulnerable are the Village of the Workers, Deir El Bahari and the Valley of the Colors. Accordingly it will be necessary to devise geotechnical solutions to prevent the destruction of (at least) some of the monuments under consideration here.

The role of geoarchaeology in the preservation and management of the Theban Necropolis, West Bank, Egypt

Site investigation borehole cores and temporary shaft exposures at the Toll House Pumping Station shaft site, Castle Hill, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, have revealed new data on the Callovian to Lower Oxfordian (Jurassic) succession.The condensed transgressive marine unit, the Lower Callovian Cornbrash Formation, rich in berthierine ooids and abundant shelly fossils, and the attenuated Cayton Clay Formation represent the Early Callovian marine transgression that flooded the low-gradient alluvial plain which is represented by the underlying Scalby Formation.The Callovian Osgodby Formation (Red Cliff Rock and Langdale members) is an extensively bioturbated, silty sandstone with abundant berthierine-pyrite ooids in the lower part.It was deposited in lower-to upper-shoreface settings.Slow sedimentation rates, with long sediment residence time, resulted in a diverse ichnofauna and a high bioturbation index.Framboidal pyrite ooids in the lower Osgodby Formation sandstones are interpreted as being formed in anoxic lagoons in the nearshore zone; ooids were subsequently swept offshore during storm surge-ebb events.Cold water dinoflagellate cysts of Boreal affinity such as Gonyaulacysta dentata in the lower part of the Oxford Clay Formation indicate an EarlyOxfordian age.This is confirmed by the presence of the zonal ammonite species Quenstedoceras mariae and is consistent with a relatively cold, but warming, palaeoclimate at this time.Shaft excavations revealed a new major fault, the Toll House Fault, which is interpreted to be a splay fault bifurcating off the main Castle Hill Fault.Together, the Toll House and Castle Hill faults form the western bounding faults of the Peak Trough, a graben-like structure that extends northwards, offshore.

The National Coal Mining Museum in West Yorkshire affords a rare opportunity for the public to visit a former colliery (Caphouse) and experience at first hand the geology of a mine. The geology at the museum can be seen via the public tour, limited surface outcrop and an inclined ventilation drift, which provides the best geological exposure and information. The strata encountered at the site are c . 100 m thick and are of latest Langsettian (Pennsylvanian) age. The ventilation drift intersects several coal seams (Flockton Thick, Flockton Thin, Old Hards, Green Lane and New Hards) and their associated roof rocks and seatearths. In addition to exposures of bedrock, recent mineral precipitates of calcium carbonates, manganese carbonates and oxides, and iron oxyhydroxides can be observed along the drift, and there is a surface exposure of Flockton Thick Coal and overlying roof strata. The coals and interbedded strata were deposited in the Pennine Basin in a fluvio-lacustrine setting in an embayment distant from the open ocean with limited marine influence. A lacustrine origin for mudstone roof rocks of several of the seams is supported by the incidence of non-marine bivalves and fossilized fish remains whilst the upper part of the Flockton Thick Coal consists of subaqueously deposited cannel coal. The mudstones overlying the Flockton Thick containing abundant non-marine bivalves are of great lateral extent, indicating a basin-wide rise of base level following coal deposition that may be compared with a non-marine flooding surface.

Patterned ground on chalkland at Hare Park, Cambridgeshire, includes patterns associated with a periglacial climate (stripes, nets), but also a type of pattern distinctly differing from these. These patterns are seen in the Fort field, to the east of the Hare Park ridge, which extends northwards across the Chalk escarpment and from the Anglian till plateau to the south. Three valleys are present in the Fort field, draining to the NE. Stripes and nets are associated with the two older valleys, and are associated with incision of streams of the Chalk escarpment. The other patterns, developed on the surface of the Moulton Head, consist of depressed rings and arcs forming wide and low ditches. These are shown to be filled with sandy sediment. They result from Chalk solution associated with pools formed by groundwater released from a perched aquifer in the Chalk. The pools pre-dated the head, with the depth of depression reflecting the degree of subsequent subsidence, and the patterns are related to the presence of sand bodies older than the head. The Fort field patterns are related to the superficial deposits immediately to the west by analysis of boreholes and local geological records. The Moulton Head interdigitates with clays interpreted as being of proglacial origin, as are the Head Gravels of Hare Park. The proglacial origin is related to the Fenland mid-Wolstonian Tottenhill glaciation at c. 160 ka. The relation of the Palaeolithic archaeology of Hare Park to the deposits is considered and compared with records of palaeoliths in proglacial sediments in southern Fenland.
