The paper analyzes papal utterances, primarily at councils but also in letters, referring too different aspects of the Peace and Truce of God from the time of Pope Leo IX to Pope Innocent II. It seeks to identify papal motives for the appropriation of this originally local institution to further a peaceful Christian ordering of daily life and to include it in the universal papal agenda. Textual comparisons show that utilitas communis was the central concern.

The antagonism between the followers of Nicaea and the bishops who believed in the divinity of Jesus Christ, but did not accept the term “homoousios”, prevented for long time the creation of an anti-Arian party. The synod of Alexandria of 362, summoned by Athanasius of Alexandria, took a first step in the process of approaching these two theological groups. One of the decisions taken by the synod was the writing and sending to the church of Antioch of Syria of a letter with which the Fathers of the Alexandrian synod wanted to facilitate the reconciliation between the followers of Eustachius, whose leader was then Pauline, and those who saw Meletius as the representative of the Orthodox faith. The letter proposes a protocol of dialogue that constitutes an itinerary of reconciliation, that could be followed in contexts of theological dissent similar to that of the Antiochian church. This itinerary is composed by three steps: the determination of a common basis of faith, the rejection of the heresy of which each group is accused by the rival party, the proposal of the doctrine of which each group consider himself the only defender.

Among the many problems the council of Constance (1414–1418) had to solve the ending of the scism and the reuniting of the church was the one of highest priority. Furthermore, the assembly had to discuss some conflicts and disputes which have been a threat to ecclesiastical peace and a burden to the conciliar nations gathered in Constance. In this regard, the conflict with the Bohemian reform movement, personalized by Jan Hus, was just as part of the agenda as well as the question whether it was justifiable to eliminate a tyrant (the Petit case and the Falkenberg case). In the article the author investigates the preconditions which enabled the council’s peacemaking policy to succeed. Furthermore, he discusses the methods and the capacity of the fathers to take an active role in peacekeeping as well as the posible reasons for which peace-making efforts could fail. While succeeding in reuniting the church the council mostly failed in its peacekeeping policy, particularily when divergent interests of the secular powers came into conflict. To appease a secular conflict by ecclesiastical efforts was accepted by the adversaries only if the gained an individual advantage. Otherwise they blocked all efforts of the fathers to resolve a conflict and to re-establish peace.

Abstract Reform or Papal Election – the Council and its Ordeal: An Inner-Conciliar Dispute between ‘Majority’ and ‘Minority’ at the Council of Constance. The broad consensus that prevailed among the Fathers at the beginning of the Council of Constance gave way to a climate of tension, at the latest after the resurgence of the English-French conflict in mid-1415, which made the inner tensions among the participants of the Council more and more apparent. The front that arose between ‘majority’ and ‘minority’ only followed ‘national’ borders to a limited extent, and for a long time it had not been firmly established, hence shifts and overlaps were still possible. The arrival of the Spaniards – first the Aragonese, later the Castilians – and the outbreak of the conflict of nations can be interpreted as key events in this development, which led to the formation of the two blocs. The national tensions between the English and the French were overlaid by the question of how the Council should proceed further: to proceed to the election of a new Pope first or to prioritize the reform of the church. For a long time both sides were in balance, but after the Castilians’ accession to the Council in the summer of 1417, the situation changed rapidly. The predominance of a coalition of Cardinals, Italica, Gallicana and the Castilians grew, while the group assembled around Sigmund, Germanica, Anglicana and the Aragonese increasingly eroded and became a ‘minority’. A finally negotiated compromise, in which both sides were able to save face, rendered a successful conclusion of the council possible.

Abstract For 150 years it has been alleged that Augustin Theiner had been dismissed as Prefect of the Vatican Archives because he had given the rules of procedure of the Council of Trent to the bishops of the council minority. Thus writes the Augsburg’s “Allgemeine Zeitung” in June 1870, and in consequence many other newspapers. The eyewitnesses are far from agreement. Other reasons may have led to the dismissal. Historians, however, have considered the newspaper’s account to be true. But Trento’s rules of procedure were already widely known. So it seems unlikely that the Pope, who in 1867 made Trent’s documents available to a group of cardinals and consultors, would deprive Theiner of the keys simply because he had shown this well known documents to the bishops of the minority.

Abstract This paper analyzes canon 3 of the council of Pisa of 1135, with which the trade in persons is prohibited, pointing out that this prohibition must be considered valid also for the sale of inhabitants of Corsica, be they men or women. After having drawn up a general overview of the council, it will focus on the text of the third canon to understand the reasons that led the council fathers to deal with the subject of slavery, firmly defending the Corsican population, considered as a “minority” victim of a political and economic system. As we will try to show, the text of this canon is a unicum of its kind and is fully inserted within the panorama of the Church’s teaching on the subject of slavery, adding a new piece to the mosaic of what was already known about the work of the ecclesiastical institution on this subject.
